Right now (in May 2024), South Korean badminton players are not ranking in the world, but some of their players have made noteworthy achievements. This post is dedicated to those South Korean badminton players who made their name in the world.

Career:

Seo Seung-jae is the first South Korean badminton player in 24 years to win two gold medals in a single edition of the BWF World Championships. He has a career-high ranking of number 2 in the men’s doubles category as of 20 February 2024 and again number 2 ranking in the mixed doubles category as of 12 March 2024.

He has 14 titles in the BWF World Tour, out of which 8 are from the men’s doubles category and 6 from the mixed doubles category. Another 4 titles in BWF Grand Prix with 1 men’s doubles and 3 mixed doubles wins. Plus, two titles for men’s doubles in the BWF International Challenge/Series.

Seo Seung-jae is an aggressive and versatile player. He specializes in the doubles game. He has quick reflexes, which help with with sharp net play. He mostly uses a left forehand grip which makes predicting his shots a bit difficult. He can easily transition between defense and offense. Career:

An Se-young is currently (as of 8 April 2023) ranked as the number 1 player in the world in the women’s singles category. She has a career record of 286 wins and 61 losses. And she achieved all of this at the age of 22.

She won the World Championships in 2023 and the Asian Games in 2022. She even has 21 titles from the BWF World Tour and one win in the BWF International Challenge/Series. All of this is in the women’s singles category.

She has also won several medals in women’s doubles and mixed doubles categories. The most notable win is the Uber Cup in 2022 for women’s doubles.

An Se-young is known for her defensive gameplay. She plays with great patience. She waits for the right moment to attack. This not only prolongs the rally but also creates an element of surprise. She uses deception and powerful strokes at the right moment to overwhelm her opponents.

Career:

Kim Gi-jung first came into the spotlight when he won a bronze medal in mixed doubles at the World Junior Championships in 2008. He and his partner Kim Sa-rang achieved the highest ranking of number 2 in the world in the men’s doubles category on 22 September 2016.

He won his first Superseries at the Japan Open in 2012. He had an excellent career for the next two years. Until the unfortunate event of a one-year suspension in 2014, his career was soaring. Even after that, he recovered by winning the  Korea Masters Grand Prix Gold in 2015.

Playing Style:

Kim Gi-jung is a powerful and aggressive doubles player. He puts a lot of power into his shots, so most of them are difficult to return. His smashes and quick movements around the court are a great combination to render the opponent helpless.

Kim Ga-eun has been playing badminton at a local level since her early years. Her first major international game was the 2014 Summer Youth Olympics. She later also participated in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Kim has a career record of 174 wins and. 110 losses which is excellent for a South Korean player. He was selected to be part of the national badminton team of South Korea in 2016. It’s the same year in which she won bronze medals at the BWF World Junior Championships and Asian Junior Championships.

Playing Style:

Kim Ga-eun is a more balanced player, but her defensive skills are more solid. She is known for her consistency and ability to handle long rallies, so tiring her out is not the best strategy for winning. She likes to show consistent performance throughout the match.

Career:

Heo Kwang-hee was selected to be part of the South Korean national badminton team in 2012. He was 17 years old at that time and was studying at Dankook University. Two years later, in 2014, he joined the Samsung Electro-Mechanics team.

He participated and won bronze medals in World Junior Championships 2012 and Asian Junior Championships in 2012 and 2013. In his senior circuit, he managed to become a semi-finalist at the U. S. Open Grand Prix Gold 2017 and New Zealand Open 2018.

Playing Style:

Heo Kwang-hee is an all-round player. He uses a mix of offensive and defensive skills on the court. He adapts well to different playing styles. So, it’s easy for him to study the opponent and anticipate their moves. This gives him an edge, especially if the opponent plays a predictable game.
