Thomas Cup

Thomas Cup tournament was invented by Sir George Thomas in 1948-49. He was the first president of the Badminton World Federation (BWF). It was then held every three years. But since 1982, it is held every two years.

Thomas Cup is a team event for the men’s doubles category. It follows a group-stage format in which 16 teams are divided into 4 groups. Two teams from each group with the highest score qualify for the next round.

The score is decided based on best-of-five individual matches, out of which three are singles events, and two are doubles events. The winners get a share of the money purse of $1 million set aside for Thomas Cup and Uber Cup.

Uber Cup

The Uber Cup is a women’s equivalent of the Thomas Cup. It was first held in 1957. It was named after Betty Uber, a former British badminton player who had the idea for the tournament.

The match format is completely similar to the Thomas Cup. Three singles and two doubles events are played for each tie. It is a matter of international pride to win an Uber Cup for your country.

Sudirman Cup

Just like the Thomas Cup is for men’s teams and the Uber Cup is for women’s teams, the Sudirman Cup is for mixed teams. It was first played in Jakarta, Indonesia in 1989. It is named after Dick Sudirman, a prominent Indonesian badminton player and administrator.

Each country sends a team of their next mixed team players to compete at the Sudirman Cup. Teams compete in ties consisting of five matches – men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles.

The winning team gets the honor of being the world’s best mixed-team badminton nation for the next two years – until the ext tournament takes place.

BWF Super Series

The BWF Super Series was inaugurated in 2007. It is a series of grade two badminton tournaments arranged throughout the year. The top eight players/teams from each of the five categories are invited to participate in the BWF Super Series finals.

In 2011, the Super Series was further classified into two levels – Super Series Premier and Super Series. In a Super Series total of 12 tournaments are played all over the world before the final. Out of these, 5 are classified as Super Series Premier.

Unfortunately, the BWF Super Series has been discontinued since 2018 as it was superseded by the BWF World Tour.

BWF World Tour

The BWF World Tour was launched in 2018 to replace the BWF Super Series. It is a series of tournaments with different levels based on players’ rankings and prize money.

The six levels in this tournament include – World Tour Finals, Super 1000, Super 750, Super 500, Super 300, and Super 100. Each tournament is held at different times in different locations.

Winners from each category and each level of the tournament receive significant prize money. It can be definitely categorized as the single largest and most prestigious badminton tournament in the world.

All England Open

The All England Open is the oldest and one of the most prestigious badminton tournaments in the world. It was first played in 1899 in London when the concept of badminton tournaments was non-existent.

All England Open is actually a part of the BWF World Tour. But I have mentioned it separately because of its historical significance. It is held in England every time. In 2024, it was Yonex was the majority sponsor, and the total prize pool for the tournament was US$1,300,000.

Badminton Asia Championships

The Badminton Asia Championships, established in 1962, is a continental championship for Asian players. It was known as the Asian Badminton Championships until 2006. Winning this tournament signifies dominance within Asia and a chance of international recognition.

Commonwealth Games

Badminton was first introduced in the Commonwealth Games in 1966. Ever since then, it has been a part of the tournament for 14 consecutive times. These games are held any where in the world. The location is fixed by the governing bodies.
